Posing, Prompts & Tips | A Crash Course

These are just a few tips + tricks we use when posing our couples to get real emotions and help them have fun.

(pssst…these are the ones that never fail)

First of all, thank you for being here! We love being able to share what we’ve learned. Honestly, we get so encouraged when we know these posts are helpful and that you benefit from them. Before we dive in, go download our FREE Lightroom Preset!

Now; to create emotion filled images you have to keep in mind that there is a huge difference when doing editorial work vs. documentary style. When doing editorial work, you, as the photographer, will decide what the emotion behind the shoot is. When you are documenting a real couple’s love, you’ll want to create a space where they can showcase their emotions so you can capture just that.

DOCUMENTARY SHOOT

DOCUMENTARY SHOOT

Before we dig in, there are two main things to keep in mind when using prompts to capture those “GOLDEN IMAGES”.

  1. IN BETWEENS.

The moments in between prompts and poses are the most important. Those are pure gold! So, capture them. After you’ve asked the couple to do something and they’ve done it and you’ve got it, once you say “Ok, that was great”. Right there! What’s about to happen is what you want to capture. When they put their guard down and look to each-other to talk about the awkward face they were doing while you were shooting or to kiss because now they want to do it and not because they’ve been asked to do it, that’s your golden image.

  2. DETAILS MATTER.

Focus some on the details. Maybe the way their hands are touching each-other, tattoos, their drinks, a necklace or a plant they have at home. Detailed close-ups give a feeling of intimacy and captures their uniqueness. Let them know you are capturing those details sometimes; “You guys feel free to talk about whatever you want right now, I’m just capturing your shoes.” That way they know there is no pressure on whatever face they are doing and most likely they’ll put their guards down for you to get some real emotions and also, for you to get to know them better and learn what kind of couple they are by paying attention to their conversation.

Capisce?.. good.

LET’S DIG IN!

“TRACE EACH-OTHERS FACES WITH YOUR NOSES”

This will create super ticklish reactions and cute smiles. Most likely they’ll end up kissing!

“TICKLE, LIFT OR TACKLE HIM/HER”

One of them has to run and the other one has to catch and tickle the other non-stop, lift them in the air or tackle them (on snow, or on the bed, etc. not on gravel for obvious reasons).

“HOLD HANDS AND BUMP HIPS AS YOU WALK”

This can go very wild. They’ll have fun, the photos will look very relaxed and happy and they’ll most likely end up laughing their asses off!

“PRETEND YOU’RE A BUCKING BULL”

Start with a cute piggy back ride, and turn it into a bucking bull. After all the action ask them to look at each-other’s eyes. There is your true love capture!

“MAKE OUT LIKE YOU’RE IN HIGH SCHOOL”

Here is the thing, usually our faces don’t look good when kissing, but this is a good prompt for focusing on details rather than their faces + gets the loving energy going.

Bonus tip: Study your couple before you call this shot, make sure they are comfortable with PDA, and feel free to treat them to drinks before the shoot.
This way you get to know them better and they’ll be more relaxed.

“HOW WOULD YOU SAY ‘GOOD BYE’ IF YOU WEREN’T SEEING EACH-OTHER FOR A YEAR?”

We like to leave this one for the end of the session, after they’ve connected more with each-other, with you and gotten more comfortable with the camera. Bonus points if you play some music.

You’ll get all the feels with this one.
